Hey Phil
Have you driven that DD2 at all? Man that thing sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Do you know exactly how it mounts up to the rear axle? I have only seen pictures, but nothing really clear. I also hear that Rotax is opening that engine up for use on other manufactures karts.
Man; 125cc direct drives 2 Speed with paddle shift; I would totally love to play around with one of those things one day.

Yes I raced it at NCMP last weekend with MWSS. It is defintely a blast to drive. The rear axle has a splined section that goes through the gearbox. It has an internal wet clutch so you can stop in gear without stalling. The paddle shifter is cool...your hands never leave the steering wheel. Best feature though is the brakes.....it will out brake anything out there. If you can't make it to SBRP this Saturday, we'll setup a test at Norway next month.

ROTAX 125 MAX DD2 engine now offered to all chassis manufacturers
09/05/2005
The 125 ROTAX MAX DD2 (direct drive 2 speed) with its revolutionary maintenance free chainless drive train system is now offered to all chassis manufacturer.
The DD2, already used in the ROTAX RM1 kart for more than 2 years has proven its reliability and performance in numerous races of the ROTAX MAX Challenge (RMC) and at the ROTAX Grand Finals in Lanzarote.
During a presentation in Lonato all top manufacturers like TONY Kart, CRG, Birel, Swiss Hutless, PCR, Haase, Tecno, Intrepid; SODI Kart, Kombi Kart and M-Tec were present and had also the chance to test the engine on the track.
A limited quantity of engines will be supplied to the manufacturers within the next 2 months to be able to develop, test and finally homologate their chassis before end of this year.
Beside CIK homologation all DD2 chassis will be approved by ROTAX to be used in the DD2 class of the RMC 2006. A list will be shown on the ROTAX webpage www.rotax-maxchallenge.com at the end of the year.
The DD2 class will be the „shifter class“ within the RMC.
The first engines out of serial production will be delivered throughout the worldwide ROTAX distributor network by February 2006.

Thanks Roberto....I meant to address that point. Opening it up to other chassis manufacturers will most definitely mean larger classes.....it's all good.

hi phil
i'm definitely interested!... this kart looks great... front *and* rear brakes, brake bias control, paddle shift, and a 34hp engine... nice!
it may be a little over my head to have as a "first kart" but i'm definitely interested in checking it out...
i'm still planning to cut my teeth on an HPV for a season or two and then maybe take the plunge and go for TaG or RM1... i think giving both of those classes another year or two to take some more shape will help too...
it seems like TaG is still getting organized and RM1 is still more of an upstart right now...
correct me if i am wrong

TAG (USA) has some issues...too many motors and no one really qualified to tech them. The Rotax program on the other hand is very organized and is growing like wild fire. I believe with your karting experience you could go straight to a FR125, skip HPV and you would be fine. Hire someone like Brian Jacobsen to spend a couple days with you at the track and you would be competitive.
The RM1 is about to explode on the market with the new change. Not allowing other chassis manufacturers to run in the RM1 program was holding it back. I think you will see a lot more RM1's at the track this year. Let me know when you want to test the RM1 and we can set it up.
I'll be at USAIR this Friday and Saturday. I won't be checking the forum until I get back. If you want to test the RM1 at SBRP this Saturday, you'll need to call me @847-456-1624. If you want to do it at Norway, let me know and I'll setup a test when I get back.

Brian is Steve Jacobsen's son. Steve owned and operated Profile Racing up until a couple years ago. He sold it and Brian stayed on with the new owner. Brian is a 32 time WKA National Champion. He is one of the best racers I've ever met. One of his most impressive feats is qualifying on the pole at his very first SKUSA ProMoto Tour race going up against some of the best racers in the country.
You can reach him at Profile 630-871-1964 or on his cell 630-201-6630

Three of the Masters Pro Series members stepped up to shifters for the 2006 season. They are selling their RM1's which are in like new condition....prices range from $5000 to $5500...options include MyChron Plus and streeter big foot kart stands.
Anyone interested can contact me for more information.
What classes, besides Rotax, can I race in with an RM1?

The RM1 races in it's own class except in the Masters Pro Series where the Spec Moto races with them but with a 40lb weight penalty.... 2006 MPS schedule is posted on here.
Road America Kart Club (RAKC) Elkhart Lake WI is planning on having a class for the RM1 this year.
Other than that, if you show up with 3 or more RM1's at just about any club event, they will make a class for you.
There are 14 MPS members racing the RM1 this year, 6 of which live in the Chicago area. If you need some guys to race with at Norway, we would be up for it.

Thanks for your input. Why don't you guys already race at Norway? It seems you already have enough to create a class. I am interested in trying out the RM1, but I don't think I can commit to going anywhere further than Norway. I don't want to buy a kart and then have no one to race with. Is there a class for Spec Moto at Norway?
Basically, I want to get into a spec class at Norway. I don't have the time to tear apart my engine and rebuild it after every race. And I don't want to have to do that to be competitive. After I set my kart up initially, I just want to worry about consumables. Is there a class like that at Norway?

:D HA! :D I guess I was asking for that. Are spec classes just not as popular at Norway (or anywhere else)?

Rick,
Rotax is a great program. Unfortunately we do not have a strong program around the Chicagoland area.

To be perfectly honest, the previous owner of Norway is the reason we didn't run much there last year. With Les and Andy running things, you'll see us there with the RM1's a few more times this year. There are actually 4 RM1 owners in the area that may be persuaded to run the CH club series. Spec Moto is growing like wild fire in the west and will catch on here in the Mid-West given a little time.
Of the two, the RM1 definitely is easier to maintain but there is still a laundry list of items that need to be checked between race weekends. Whatever you choose to run, to be competitive it will take a lot of tinkering and routine maintenance to get the max out of your kart, spec or modified.
If you just want to drive and not work on the kart, Andy has a program that covers cleaning, race prep and storage at Norway. Also VKP in Carol Stream will clean, prep, store and transport your kart to the track on race days.
How many gears do you want to shift? 2 or 6? Both karts are a blast to drive at Norway but the shifter is about 2secs/lap faster.

Yea Roberto....I admit they're a lot of fun...but once you feel the rush of entering the monza at the end of the back straight doing 85mph.....there is nothing else like it.
