Last night, CIR ran the first “official” Monthly Run Off, after having tested the new format two weeks ago.
For anyone yet unfamiliar with the format, there are two timed qualifying sessions, the finishing order of each being determined by single fast lap time (like an Arrive & Drive). Points are assigned to the finishing order: 1st = 15, 2nd = 13, 3rd = 11, 4th = 10, etc. The sum of the two timed qualifiers sets the grid for the first of two position-based races. The first is a 15-lap event, the outcome being determined by position in that race only and sets the grid for the main event. The 30-lap main is for all the marbles (in this case, glass trophies handed out immediately after the race, as well as bragging-rights, which I’ll do now).
Heavyweights: Winner – Roberto Castro, Second – Peter Jankovskis, Third – Paul Russo
Lightweights: Winner – Martin Lenick, Second – Dave Mickelson, Third – Matthew Palmieri
Obviously I’m a little biased, but I think it’s a good format and event (ask me what I think after I come in last). There’s a mix of fast-lap racing and position-racing, and we switched directions each race, plus it's always fun to race on Track 3. Lightweights and Heavyweights are timed separately (even during the same race), so coveted ProScore points don’t get wasted on us skinny guys.
Many more racers showed up for the two trial runs of this format than did for the first official Run Off last night. I don’t know why, maybe it’s just a coincidence. If there are reasons that CIR should know about, please let Reed know – again, I think it’s a good event and look forward to doing it again next month.
Hope to see you there.
