With 18 drivers beginning the race and 4 of them never having raced T3 before I was a bit apprehensive to start. Then this amazing thing happened. The fast people were patient and the new people paid attention to blue flags and pointed people by when necessary!
The race was (the reg lately) dominated by David Mickelson. It has been commented repeatedly that the guy is like a freakin metronome and just doesn't make any mistakes. Good job again David.
For the first 60 laps or so of the race there was a train of about 6 karts that stayed tight on each other for some extremely exciting racing.
The group was comprised of light weight drivers and heavy weight drivers:
Peter Jankovskis
Dave Harrington
Matthew Palmieri
Zach Ply
Tony Velez
and Matthew Bigos
Matthew P. eventually pulled off to change karts when his brakes started to go away.
Tony Velez spun under braking going into the hairpin. He was in the middle of the train and it looked like he got on the brakes just a little too hard causing him to spin and get stuck against the wall. Once he got going again he was a lap down but right behind David Mickelson who he immediately latched onto. He didn't lose any ground to Dave for about 15 laps and then I think fatigue started to set in.
Peter, Dave, and Zach, had one of the best races I have seen in a really long time! All running nose to tail for almost 40 laps and moving through lap traffic together. Peter and Dave worked on Zach for a LONG time before Peter made a brilliant pass on him and then Dave a few laps later. Dave seemed to be quicker a couple turns and then Peter had him on a couple of turns. Everyone upstairs was on their feet waiting for Dave to make an attempt. It looked like he was going to until there were 2 laps to go and it looked like Peter and Dave split a lap kart being lapped and Dave got the slightly slower side. In the end Peter and Dave finished the race 1st and 2nd in Heavy weight and 2nd and 3rd overall!
It was a fantastic race and I hope to see everybody here again next month!
