Topic: DD2 Chassis selection - Which one should "I" buy?
"I" refers to anyone. Driving style, budget, loyalty, price, resale value  , all are factors.
I'm leaning toward Birel, because I'd like to support the home-track.
I've heard that the Birel DD2 is simply an adaptation to their shifter engineering, and not a ground-up design like the Rotax RM1. I've heard the CRG "DD2" chassis is DD2 ground-up.
I anticipate that this will be the "Roberto (loyalty) vs. Phil (sales) thread", so please try to be objective.

Disclaimer: I am in no way an expert. In fact, I'm hardly knowledgeable about the subject at all  But I did some research on this very subject before making my decision.
RM1: This is a complete turnkey kart originally created by Rotax. It has very good brakes. The chassis is more stiff than CRG/Birel/Arrow/etc. You could pick up a used one for $4000 (some guy was selling one for $3800). Phil has some of these for sale (a plug for you Phil... don't forget to give me a discount on some fuel :P ). Tunability/adjustability is not as easy as CRG/Birel/Arrow. Also, the rear axle is a Rotax only part and expensive. Many of the components are Rotax only and CHMS won't have them. But Phil (another plug!! keep those discounts coming!) can get them, I'm sure.
Birel: CHMS will carry most of the consumables you will need. I'm not too sure about the DD2 specific stuff. Chassis is softer so it handles better. On the flip side, it could "wear out" faster, according to some. Birel took 1st and 2nd at Rotax DD2 Grand Nationals.
CRG: CHMS does not carry most of the consumables for this kart. Les had to order me some brake pads. The chassis is the most widely used one in DD2 and you will benefit from community knowledge. Good components. Some people say the chassis is a little too stiff.
Arrow: I don't know too much about this one. But it looks like they make good karts. Very few people using them.
In my opinion, you should get a Birel. That way you can support CHMS and have access to most of the parts you need. :)
Also, don't forget to check out all the chassis that are allowed:

CRG DD2 is a DARK RIDER chassis; it comes on a 30mm version and a 32mm version.

These two chassis are homologated for Rotax Max Challenge and the 125 Max DD2
Rick, what version did you get? 32mm a stiffer chassis or a 30mm?

This is the list of chassis approved for DD2; the CRG factory also makes chassis for Maranello Karts, Zanardi Karts, VanKart, etc. They used to make the PTK Kart (Paul Tracy Kart until last year).

Do not believe that the made one chassis just for DD2; they are ALL adaptations of their shifter chassis.

Basically all the manufacturers cut the two right cassettes off so the DD2 package can fit. But, I was told that the CRG chassis had some more modifications that made it easier to fit the DD2 package on it.
What about KartMini? How come they don't make a DD2 chassis? Maybe Phil can help answer this one.

I have the 32mm.
I recently asked Jordon Musser about his kart and this is what he had to say:

The motor I ran at the nationals was the same motor I ran at the regionals, which was "beat on" as a demo kart for Birel.. nothing was touched on it 'cept jets.
I have never run a CRG DD2, so its tough to say where to start with setup, but from helping others- the chassis responds the same as any other kart chassis. I have found the same with my Birel, stuff that worked on a "normal" chassis work the same way on the DD2. Remember that with the additional power, you still want the kart free- but you need it to put down power also.
I think Birel makes the best stuff right now. Every chassis I have run has been spot on and easy to tune.
I am sponsored by a Birel dealer now, but I had options to run other chassis.. but I wanted to be involved with Birel.. they also have great customer support.
With that said, all karts are good... its just a matter of setting them up. Gary Carlton just won the Stars championship on your chassis.. it can go fast!
When you can win a national championship steering with one hand and manually shifting with the other hand behind your back, I guess you can drive just about anything and win.

That's what was so impressive about Jordan's win. He can flat out drive. He was so much faster than 2nd place that the handicap just made it an interesting race. He was in a zone all weekend. I hope he has some good luck in the world finals. Two years in a row he was running up front, as high as 2nd place I heard, and got taken out. He's due.

I believe if he had a DD2 motor strapped to a skate board he would still smoke the competition.

Wouldn't that be unfair to the other skateboarders? :D

If a standard axle will work in a DD2, that must mean that there is something differnet in the RM1 chassis that requires a Rotax axle. What could that be? There are only bearings left. Why would a standard axle work in a DD2/xxx and not a DD2/Rotax-RM1?

The RM1 carries 2 brake rotors on the rear axle. A standard axle does not have a keyway for the second rotor. If you could find a machine shop to cut a second keyway you could make it work.

Rick:
NO, I do not work for Birel but I do know that the importer for Birel in the U.S.A. is 3 hours from my house; that anytime that I need parts or Freeline accessories, they have them in stock.
Also, I know that the closest track to Chicago (Norway) is a Birel dealer; and that the second closest track to Chicago (Badger Kart Club) has a lot of Birel owners and track support from a kart shop that is also a Birel dealer.

Martin,
Maybe you should talk to January Grove about what DD2 chassis to buy....and what color hair is fastest!

Is she sporting the factory decal kit and hairdo?
 I don't think so. :lol1:
But you have to give her credit. She's about 45 years old and still made it to the world championships beating out real tough competition consisting of people half her age.

Not to sound like a sore loser but she didn't 'beat' the competition to finish 6th. She finished 6th because of attrition. Even so I wish her success at the world finals. She's a good driver and has a lot of heart.

You take what you can get right? I beat Tonis over the weekend and even though his car was broken (he thought) I can rub it in his face forever!
