View Full Version : Arrive & Drive Grand Prix Race May 20th 2007
It seems that most people voted for May 20th 2007 as the best day to have a grand prix race at CHMS in the arrive and drive karts. We are a week away from that and we need to start getting this thing together. Please confirm whether or not you will be making it to this fun event asap. I'll talk to Les at CHMS to setup all the details regarding the race

If anyone else wants to join in on the fun, now is the time to let me know. I'm sure that guys with 2 strokes will also be running those that day as well. Perhaps we should also plan a barbeque for food. If everyone brings beer, scotch or some kind of meat, we should be ok. We might also need a grill or two if anyone wants to volunteer and bring theirs.

Yay.
I hope I can learn quickly. I've driven a lap and a half on the track, and that was my only outdoor karting experience.

I will be able to attend from noon to 4pm. What time are we going to be on track and what is the projected cost?
It's going to be $95 per driver for 1 practice session, 2 heat races and a feature race. There is optional insurance for crash damage for $10. If you don't take the insurance, you're responsible for any damage you cause.
Les thinks it will be better if we can start at 10 am. Can you guys make it at 10 am?

10:00 is a little early for me. Can we split it and make it 11:00 ??
Will I need some sort of a racing suit and any protective gear?
If so where can I acquire this at?
I suppose if it has to be 10:00am I will still be there.

Matt, Stefan, Mirko and I will be there. Probably with one TaG, one HPV, and one Supercan (no shifter). We can handle 10, 11 or 12, just let us know what is the final decision.

Hey guys, yes as Vince stated we will be there...ill also be there saturday racing the TaG kart. Hope to race some of you guys. :)
Talked to JAYKAY and he said he will be there for sure and he can make it at 10 am or noon. Just missing one confirmation from Martin.

What kind of TaG kart are you racing? Are you bringing the shifter?

Just to clarify, I can make it at any time.
Do I need to buy a pass to race there as well as the $95 dollars?

I think the $95 is all inclusive for the arrive and drive races and includes a hot pit pass.

No way I can make it before 11am. I'll probably be leaving Blackhawk around 9:30 or 9:45. If I don't make it in time to race, I'll hang around to watch you guys.

Should we start an over/under for how many gallons of Gatorade Peter is going to drink on Sunday?

2 Gallons.
Ok, I talked to Les again. He said it usually takes 2 hours to run one of these. But since Sunday is so busy, it might take 3 hours to run our rental kart race. The reason that it takes so long is that they have to let the 2-stroke guys practice too. I really have no problem with that, because I will just drive my 2-stroke in between the races. And I'm sure that Peter, Martin, Roberto, Stefan and Matthew will have no problem with it either.
With that in mind, I think we should just stick with the original noon starting time. That way everyone can participate. Please make sure you are at the track and ready to drive at 12pm. It will probably take you 30 minutes to sign up and pay for the race, so I'd plan on showing up at 11am or 11:30 at the latest.
No one seems interested in the bar-b-q... so don't expect to have one.

How fast are these karts compared to the karts at CIR (grip and power-wise)?

I have no clue. I've never driven one of the new Birel rental karts yet. JAYKAY and Roberto have driven them.

In comparison to the old karts at Norway, I think that they have a little more grunt and they do not understeer quite as much. Plus they feel very well built. Their old karts had seen a lot of miles and quite a bit of abuse as well.
It is tough for me to compare the handling to the CIR karts since I think that the indoor karts slide around a lot more on that smooth concrete floor. That said the CHMS karts seem to have more power as well.

Handling is almost as a race kart, the N-35 are just heavier.
They have a 9.0 HP Honda engine.

No, the logistics are too complicated - a definite disadvantage of keeping the kart at my house this year instead of in a Norway garage.:frown:

Darn-good question!! In fact, I'd prefer rain... easier on the PBRibs.

A rain race would actually be more fun in those low hp karts.

If it rains, and if you're racing Phil, I think will buy an extra $20 of insurance. :couch:
JUST KIDDING!

Rain or no rain, if I am racing you should buy all the extra insurance you can get :kungfu: :kungfu:
AND I'M NOT KIDDING!!!
ACTUALLY YES I AM :evil_lol:  :evil_lol:
Everyone took the optional $10 insurance. John asked if he could purchase $20 worth of insurance. No one needed to use the insurance. The racing was fun but I personally think the karts were really slow. They even felt slower than the old arrive and drive karts to me. They were definitely slower than the karts we drove at the 24 Hours of America race.
I let Peter and John try out my new Birel for a few laps. They both liked it. 2 more potential TaG racers???

I had a great time. That was a lot of fun. I thought that the acceleration on the karts was poor, but once up to speed it was ok and still fun. The karts probably seem very slow to Rick because he is used to driving rocket carts. Thanks again Rick for letting me test out your new ride. I felt more comfortable pushing your kart a little bit harder this time after running in our event and having a few laps under my belt.

Sounds like I didn't miss much. You guys confirmed my suspicions about those motors, what are they 5.5 or 6.5 hp? I believe the old karts had 8 hp motors and I was expecting these new karts to come with the 9 hp motors.

I would agree with Rick's assessment. The old arrive and drive karts definitely had more punch, though the new chassis is definitely an improvement over the old. It was fun.
Thanks also to Rick for letting me try out his new Tag. It certainly felt like it had a wider and taller torque band then my RM-1. A real blast to drive. I might get one next year. I'd like to have a full season with the RM-1 first though.

I had a lot of fun at the race. The karts definitely felt slow, even compared to CIR, but that probably has more to do with the size of the track. The advantage of the bigger track was that it allowed for more passing, which made for a great competition.
Thanks also to Rick for letting me try out his new Tag.
Stefan asked me if I charged you guys. I said "No". He says I'm too nice. So I'm invoicing you guys 1 beer a piece.:evil_lol:

I'd like to have a full season with the RM-1 first though. You have to make the races in order for that to happen!

I trust you realize that this means war!!:)
And, by the way, Dave hasn't done it yet, but will the next time in my kart, which he's welcome to do at no cost.
Long live TaG.
