View Full Version : CIK Rear Bumper
I'm thinking about getting the CIK approved rear bumper for my TAG kart.
http://www.socalkartsport.com/store/product/1220
Is it legal for TAG? And do you think it would prevent a kart climbing over the back end? I know it won't do much for side to side wheel to wheel contact but if it adds a margin of safety, I'm going to get it.

It looks gay and makes the kart look like a rental kart but it does add some protection. I don't know of any local track or series for that matter that would DQ you for it.

I actually think the couple that I have seen on karts looked kinda cool.

It was one of the reasons I decided to sell my HPV and buy an RM-1. Not so much the look, but the added safety.

It looks gay
I would much rather have "rear ended" the gay bumper. I think the "end" result would have been much more "pleasant".

See now if you'd kept your promise and bought a DD2 you'd have hit the macho version of the 'gay' bumper and probably been able to finish the race :evil_lol: Is it too early to start picking on you again Martin?

Too early? Who's Martin? Where am I? Who are you?
Pick away, young man. I'll take the challenge; I've got to try to compete in something for the next ??? months.

This is one competition in which I am no match for you....good to see you're in good spirits. While you're laid up you may want to use your engineering talents to design a collar bone protector. We have rib vests and chest protectors, how come no collar bone protector?
I just put in my order for the KG rear bumper. After Martin's incident and being run over on Saturday, I figured that this couldn't hurt and hopefully will help to prevent people running over the back of my kart.
The bumper is $118. The "hardware kit" is $105. :puke:
Oh well, I guess that's cheaper and less painful than a broken shin bone.
At first I was going to get red to match the body work and to be able to point out evidence of contact. But then I thought about it and ordered a black one instead because I'm sure the red one would be eventually be black in a couple of races.

If I get you some bumper stickers, will you put them on?

Does anyone sell the "cooler" looking DD2 bumper that would fit a Tag Kart? It seems to me that would sell very well, if its not avaliable already. I don't even have a kart yet but would definatly use a rear bumper for the added safety.
Went to CHMS today and installed my new insurance policy. :evil_lol:

Bumpers like that can be used as an excuse for bumping. It can actual become a disadvantage because a good driver can use it move you out the way and execute a pass much like they do in indoor karting. It does however add a measure of safety and is used in the kids classes in Europe.
Well I've never actually seen one in person until now. And I haven't had a chance to race with mine yet. But I hope that it will prevent both good and bad drivers from running me over.I'd rather get loose in a turn because someone bumped me than be taken out of a race cause someone drove right over my back tires and onto me. I'm racing with it for the first time this weekend. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Hopefully no more of this:

"I think I'm ready for Roberto now. :evil_lol:"
Rick,
I can't remember that I bump passed you? can you?
as a matter of fact the only two times we were together at the same time on the track.....the first one you were getting behing in about 3 or 4 laps....remember that? during practice?
and the second time, you crashed in turn 3 before the first lap was completed.
To be honest with you, I dont even know that I will ever try to bump pass you because I dont want you to "get on the brakes hard" before we are getting into a turn, that could turn into a real dangerous situation.
Roberto

:sorry: Yes I know that those bumps from you in the practice session were your way of just playing around.
I was just kidding Roberto :stickpoke:. We all know that you would never bump pass anyone under any circumstances.

I will bump pass a driver that I know is not going to brake entering a turn at a high speed..........
when you are doing that you have to know that the driver that you are racing knows what he/she is doing.

Have you ever considered using one of the european looking tube bumbers? I say euro looking because every karting video I saw from europe had this type of bumper. Check this link out:
http://www.bergfeltracing.com/bumpers.html
It seems to me that this type of bumper would not be as prone to bumping, etc.

TAG Rules only allow CIK FIA homologated body work. I'm not sure if that's homologated or not. The one I have is.
It looks like my bumper also survived the Rock Island Grand Prix. It still has to be fully tested. I only felt one nudge all weekend at Rock Island. That tells me that either:
a. I'm so fast that no one can keep up and bump me! :evil_lol:
b. The bumper is so intimidating that no one wanted to bump me.
c. I was in last place all the time.
d. People were bumping me and it just did such a good job absorbing the hits that I only noticed one.
e. I was extremely lucky and a guardian angel was watching over me.
The answer is obviously not A because I sucked. B is not really plausible because I saw some really crazy stuff there and I don't think anyone was lacking in the testosterone department. C's not true because I started mid pack.
It's got to be either D or E. I really hope it's D. :)

Rick,
In a track like Rock Island, without a heavy braking turn or zone, there is no space for bumping.
you go so fast on almost all the track that the only part somebody can bump you is on the formation laps.
Roberto
Roberto: So you're saying the answer is A then! I like that answer!
