I got a note from Lemons HQ stating that they need drivers forms from the drivers by 9/21. I thought I had sent mine in, but apperently not. Can all of the drivers please fax a copy of this form to Lemons HQ?

Whats our official team name again?

Rick - You will probably not have the core until Friday night after we install the new peice. I did the same thing with the brake calipers, you just take the old ones back and they give you the money.

Peter - I should have the radios on Friday. I will not have the car harness yet though. It will be the IMSA plug for sure.

Martin - I talked to Larry today and he is going to put the car harness, PTT, and charger on with your bill for your helmet Mic. I also talked to Mike at Razor Image and he is going to have your helmet done early next week and when either your or me goes to get it from him he will have all the radio stuff from Larry as well.

Jim - I will fax my form in today.

Hey Reed, Sounds good. Jason and I spent some time on the car last night and have most of the fuel system ready to go. My order from Pegasus will be here today so that should take care of the parts for the fuel system. I do need to find a couple of grommets for where the rubber lines go through the floor, but we are close. We also put the two fans together and started the wiring. We should be able to wrap that up on Friday with no problem.

Jim

Rick

I'll try to be there around the same time. I might carpool up there with Jim.

Reed: A friend of mine will be visiting from out of town, is it ok if I bring him?
I promise we won't punt anyone in your neighborhood.

I could pick up pizza for everyone as I drive in.

Reed, do you have a recommendation of a pizza place along the road in that I could phone and pickup the order?

The tires are mounted and ballanced I could drop them off on friday. I will need directions though. Let rick know he has my cell number.

Thanks Victor! That will save me time from having to go pick them up. I'll send you Reed's address in a PM. Everyone is planning on being there at 6pm.

Victor,

You could just drop the tires at my house in Lisle. I will be hauling the tires along with the car to the race next Friday.

My address is 1713 Lacey Ave. in Lisle. Just head East on Ogden until you reach the traffice light at Yackley (there will be Shell and Mobil gas stations to your right and a Family Video to your left at the intersection). Turn left at Yackley. The first cross street you come to on the right hand side of the road is Lacey. Take a right on Lacey. After going through two stop signs, look for a large brick mailbox on the right. That will be my house.

The side of my garage has a gated side yard where I keep my truck and trailer. You could just stack the tires in the side yard behind the gate.

CIR-Reed

Peter - We will worry about the pizza when everybody arrives. There is one place that makes excellent pizza and is quite close. Either we can run over and pick it up or have it delivered and give good directions to the delivery guy.

Where's Martin?!? And where is his nomex suit?

Rick
09-23-2007, 08:39 PM
Well I tried to teach Martin how to heel toe today and I let him practice in my Exige S in the Autobahn parking lot before the kart race. And then after the kart race, I let him try driving the car on the track on the south track. That was fun, entertaining and scary. I think Martin can "heel toe" now.

I unintentionally spun the car 180 and then went backwards for about 100 ft and then intentionally spun it back 180. That was weird.

Autobahn only carries karting suits so Martin still doesn't have a nomex suit.

If the car is ready to go by Thursday, I would like to pick it up and load it in my trailer Thursday evening. My hope is to leave early Friday morning with trailer in tow and arrive at the track in the early afternoon.

My understanding is that everyone else will be heading up in a motorhome sometime on Friday.

All the drivers are staying in the RV and there should be room for crew members as well. I'm not sure, but ask Reed about it.

I think Jim is going to bring a small grill. I guess everyone should just bring some meats and bread.

peterjank
09-24-2007, 11:31 AM
Victor,

I'm not sure exactly what remains do be done on the car at this point.

I think the new steering rack is in place, but Jim was looking for some advice from you on completing connections of some of the steering rack components.

We did succeed in mounting the dry brake to the car, but the fuel hose from the brake to the tank seemed to have a permanent kink in it. Jim was working on that issue as well.

pmpnuss
09-24-2007, 11:32 AM
sounds good what tools are people bringing? I will bring what i can. Is the car driveable?

CIR-Reed
09-24-2007, 01:17 PM
My dad figured out a cool trick to keep the fuel filler hose from collapsing.

That car is not driveable yet. Jim ordered the tie rod ends and they should arrive on Wednesday. I will pick them up on wednesday and hopefully install them early Thursday morning. Once those are on the car should be driveable and Peter should be able to pick it up on Thursday evening.

The camper I got is has the layout that will sleep the most people possible. I think the paperwork said it will sleep 10. I think it sleeps ten if 4 of them really like each other. I am pretty comfortable with myself and if somebody ends up sleeping in close proximity to me (other than Marty) I don't have any issue with that. I shouldn't be any problem at all to sleep everybody in the camper. I think the only time we will all be sleeping at once will be Friday night anyway.

Also, somebody or somebodies should have bright orange or flourescent shirts to wear or a big flag or something. I've seen situations where it gets very busy in the pit or paddock area and the adrenaline soaked driver flys right by the pit looking for his people.

Also, possible rain on Sat/Sun......rain gear, rainx, a pop up canopy, might make things more tolerable if it rains.

Also, Johnnie Walker might help if things go way wrong.....or way right.

Also, the charge for destroying my garage with that greasy shi_box is:
1. TMI sticker prominently displayed on the car
2. Hourly call to my cell phone with updates 847-343-1648.
3. You must win.

The neighbors think I've started a junk yard at my house. I'm sending all my tools out to be steamed, degreased and disinfected..........and I remember Reed saying, "would it be ok if we kept the Lemons car at your house for a couple of days untill the race?"......there was definetly no mention of strange young men wielding sledge hammers at two in the morning!!

Rick,
Many thanks for letting us abuse your garage and tools. We'll definitely keep you informed as the race progresses. If they have decent cell coverage, we can even provide updates to chicagoracers. I plan on bringing my laptop and wireless modem.

I have a 10x20 Ez-up canopy that I plan on bringing along in the back of my truck.

I also have a pit-board and can bring along the airtank, wrench and socket sets that I have.

RV Departure Time

As far as I know, the RV will pick everyone up at CIR. I vote the RV departs from CIR around 6pm so everyone can get there in time. Jim and Victor might have to work until 5pm so that means they won't be able to get there until 6pm.

We can pick up the RV at 2:00 pm. I was planning on picking it up with Martin right at 2:00 and driving to the nearest grocery store to get some food and gatorade and things. I was hoping the most of the people could get out of work early on friday to leave around 3 or something. Jim has already mentioned that he might ride with Peter and leave earlier in the day. That just leaves Victor, Rick, Martin, and myself (I am assuming Kent and Jason will go with Jim) and Kent and Jason if they aren't riding with Jim. We could leave here around 3 and be sitting in the fancy cars at Victors work by about 4 waiting for him to get off of work. If that isn't possible I am good to leave whenever. I am working tonight and won't be able to make it to work on the car. The rod ends are sitting on the counter in the shop. I picked them up and dropped them off. I also disconnected the throttle cable and lubricated it with some 3 in 1 oil per Jims advice. I then got in the car and worked the throttle for a couple minutes and it freed up nicely.

Rick - Is all of the radio stuff that we need with Martins helmet?

Victor - If you need to leave your car here it isn't a problem at all. Whatever works best for you.

Mr. Oyen - Thank you for your inspirational words. My goal is to finish the race and to use a quote from Rick "Not crash like Nasclowns."

Let me know how it goes tonight guys. I am planning on working on it tomorrow morning to do any finishing work that needs doing. Please come up with a list if there is anything else.

Kent, Jason and Mr. New Castle are riding with the RV. They will be meeting us at CIR.

We could leave here around 3 and be sitting in the fancy cars at Victors work by about 4 waiting for him to get off of work.Yes this sounds like a good idea... except for the fact that we would have to back track such a long way. FVMC is located near 64 and Prince Crossing. That's 8 minutes from my house. If you're going to go that far, might as well come pick me up too.

Rick - Is all of the radio stuff that we need with Martins helmet? According to Larry and Mike, it is.

Mr. Oyen - Thank you for your inspirational words. My goal is to finish the race and to use a quote from Rick "Not crash like Nasclowns."Yes, we should have a stipulation of "Whomever crashes and totals the car, shall have to store the car at their house until next year.".

That sounds like a plan. A little negative reinforcement never hurts. I will arrange with Jason or Kent to get our pal from Manchester ready to go. He needs to stay cold so we will need at least two big bags of ice to start.

CIR-Reed
09-26-2007, 01:15 PM
What will they be driving to meet us with the RV?

It almost sounds like we should arrange for myself, Martin, and the RV to meet all of you guys farther south somewhere. The track is over near detroit so we have to go south from here anyway. It does seem silly for you guys to drive up here to basically just drive back south past your houses anyway.

We will probably also need some sort of garbage can or something to keep our foreign guest in. Maybe also some tie down straps to avoid him tipping over.

pmpnuss
09-26-2007, 01:16 PM
I will talk to my boss and see if i can get off at 4. Rick if you meet me here at FVMC we can both go to cir together.

Rick
09-26-2007, 01:17 PM
Well Jim works at BP in Warrenville. I live 5 minutes from BP. FVMC is about 8-10 minutes Northeast of Warrenville. And most importantly, the gentleman from Manchester is about 10-15 minutes away from BP.

CIR-Reed
09-26-2007, 01:20 PM

Actually, the most direct route would be to take 90 to 94 towards Indiana. But I guess we could take 294 which is still closer to CIR than we are. Either way, we'd have to make our way to 294. It will be rush hour on Friday. That will suck. It's a good thing that we will have the company of the gentleman from Manchester.

pmpnuss
09-26-2007, 02:13 PM

CIR-Reed
09-26-2007, 02:55 PM
If we leave right at 4 o'clock from somewhere near FVMC or Naperville it won't be horrific. If we don't get out of there until more like 5 it will be an epic journey.

Jim's house is actually not a bad location if a couple of cars can sit there over the weekend. We could then take 88 or Ogden back to 294 and go south towards 80/94 which will then take us around the lake.

This of course all hinges on Martin getting out of work early on Friday and actually being capable of picking up the RV at 2.

I believe that I will have room for two cars behind the house since Jayme will be home I need to leave her a spot. Otherwise, all of you Naperville / Warrenville types could just drop the cars in the lot here at work, I am sure that nobody will notice. When people travel out of here on business it is not uncommon for them to leave their cars here. Just a thought.

Jim and I had a smooth drive over to the track today. We left about 9:30am and arrived at the track at approximately 3:00pm Chicago time (4:00pm track time). The track is located approximately 15 miles from the Detroit Wayne County Airport for those of you familiar with the area.

Jim purchased spray paint from the local Loews and has completed painting the car in "Gold Leaf Team Lotus" style. We are awaiting arrival of our co-drivers with decals to complete the cars presentation. I will attempt to post pictures tomorrow if time permits. We have also filled the race car with gas and have about 11 gallons of additional fuel stock piled in jugs.

Last we heard our teamates had left CIR with the RV at approximately 7pm. My guess is that they will be arriving around 1am or 2am here at the track. Luckily, I did bring along a sleeping bag. Jim will be sleeping on the floor of the trailer, with the sleeping bag providing padding. I will be sleepng on the bench seat in the back of my pickup.

peterjank
09-29-2007, 04:56 PM
Hi Rick,

I will ask Reed for your number when I get back up to the stand.

Here is our first update.

The race started about 15 minutes late at 2:15pm Eastern time. They have an unusual starting procedure. They have all the cars circle the track under yellow, then randomly select someone as the leader and drop the green flag. We had poor luck as they picked someone only about 8 cars behind Reed as the "leader" at the start, making us 32nd. Reed did a great job moving up through the field. He had us in 13th at the end of the first hour and 8th when he handed the car over to me at the end of the 2nd hour.

My stint was very eventful. About 15 minutes into my stint, the train of cars I was in stopped very suddenly. I bumped the car in front of me. Then the guy behind me hit me real hard, pushing me into the car in front of me very hard and bending up the nose. The team called me in immediately to access damage and make repairs. They ended up removing the right front fender. We lost about 10 laps in the process and fell to 13th. Over the next 45 minutes, I moved us back up to 7th.

Jim took over the car at the start of the third hour and is doing a good job thus far. When I checked just before logging on, we were running fifth.

That's it for now. I'll try to post another update after my next stint.

Clueless 1
09-29-2007, 05:31 PM
Peter, Sounds like things are going ok.

When you update could you give some idea of relative position?

Like maybe list the lap diff from position to position or just note what lap the leader is on and the lap number of your team?

Hi All,

Here is an update on our progress with the race at the halfway point.

Shortly after my first update at the four hour mark, we developed a leak in our fuel system. The change in fuel line went smoothly. However, the engine was running very rough and it took a while to diagnoss the problem as an air leak between the fresh air intake and the engine. We lost about 60 laps in total while in the pits and fell to 19th. However, the car was now running stronger than it had at the start of the race. Rick made good use of it during his stint, gaining about 5 laps on the leaders and advancing us back to 11th.

After Rick completed his stint, I went off to sleep so I can't give you much detail about the ensuing stints by Martin and Jim. However, I am happy to report that we are now up to 7th, only 9 laps down to 6th and 15 laps down to 5th. A top 5 is a good possibility but a win seems unlikely at this point. We are 74 laps down to the leader.

Reed is in the car now and I will be taking over around 3:30am eastern.

Hi all,

Here is an update on our progress at the 16 hour mark.

Another step forward, followed by two backward. During my three hour stint we managed to move from seventh to fourth. Unfortunately, my stint ended with a spectacular shower of steam from a blown heater core.

After about 40 minutes in the pits for repairs, we sent Rick out for his stint in 10, 2 laps down to 9th and 155 laps down to the overall leader. In the past 30 minutes he has made up the two laps and appears likely to move into 9th shortly.

With regret, I report that our race ended at approximately 7:30am with a burst radiator. Rick was running 8th at the time. We completed a total of 1560 laps.

We've learned a lot about the importance of car preparation. Next year we plan on replacing the fuel line before the race and removing the heater core as well.

You met some new friends.

You cemented your bond with old friends.

I could go on saying nice things, but nothing really eases the pain, except time.:frown:

Our team was relatively well prepared compared to most of the other teams. I think our fueling system was a really good idea and that gave us a huge advantage in pitstops. Even though some of the other teams had larger crews, I think our crew was extremely efficient and fast. Victor, Jason and Kent did a great job of keeping the car running and getting us in and out of the pits. We could not have done as well as we did without them. Thanks guys!

The race was very interesting. It was like a NASCAR race consisting of 40 cars on a relatively high speed autocross track. The "inner section" of the track was more like the Chicago Loop at 5pm on a Friday evening. There was a mixture of cars ranging from Volvo station wagons, to Caprices, to an RX7. The lighter cars tended to use there superior handling (and sometimes motor) to get by the bigger cars. The bigger cars tended to try to make their car even wider than it already was. There was lots of rubbing and contact both incidental and intentional (probably more of the intentional type). I wish we had pictures of the progression of body changes of the car through out the race. The before and after pictures are hilarious.

Once again, many thanks to Rick Bartuska, Art, Victor, Jason and Kent for all their help.

Team #30 won.

Next year we need to have a big steel bar welded on to reinforce the front bumper like team #30:

Do you think that our team was driving too fast?

I read that the C/D team (and possibly other teams) had 2 or 3 car teams. One team even stated that one of the C/D team's purpose was to protect their lead car and also to hold up other cars. Team #30 even stated that car #54 was intentionally trying to take them out.

There has alread been some conversation about a 3 car team next year containing some pretty interesting people.

What do you guys think about attempting to find 3 of the same car and running a 3 car team? I think it would be a huge advantage if possible. We could have tons of spares.

Some of the people that want to do it have lots of fabrication, racing, preperation, planning, endurance racing type experience.

I think it's a good idea but I think it also depends on what everyone's budget is. Is the entire team going to rotate through each of the 3 cars? Or we going to just triple the number of drivers and crew? A two car team might be more financially appealing to some of our team members. Victor had expressed interest in driving next year.

Reed,
I like the idea of a multi-car team. We could share mechanics as well. Victor did a great job, but it is too much to ask anyone to stay up for 24 hours. With two mechanics, they could work as schedule allowing each a block of uninterrupted rest.
We could also share the dump can and catch can. Leaving us the task of finding two fuel cells and dry brakes for the other cars.
Either date for the dinner (13th or 20th) works for me at this point. Looks like the 20th works better for your dad, so I'll vote for that. Good luck to Rick B at the runoffs!

Rick A,
I don't think we were driving too fast. We might have been too aggressive at times, but I don't think we abused the car with excessive speed.

Everybody,
Here is a link to my photo album for the event. It contains shots of the car before leaving for the race and also several shots of competitor cars:

A finally tally would be interesting, but I never thought we were all "sharing" the expenses: I did zero work and expected to offset that with a larger financial contribution. Now don't go trying to divide by zero - I don't have infinite cash. But, if there's any shadow of a doubt that I owe more money (food?, beer? no, scratch the beer - that's for Rick) just let me know and I'll pony up. I'll also try to remember the total for the 38 places we stopped to fuel the RV, but that's for information only - I never intended to be reimbursed for that.

I'm able to drink for more than 17 hours, and can certainly enjoy a good single-malt that would exceed $50/hr. We should just pay you off but I'd rather take the financial risk and go get drunk somewhere. :)

Since we were sharing the cost of the car, I figured we would throw the weekend expenses on there as well since we all benefited from the RV and from Peter towing the car out there. My rough estimate would be that we spent $500 to $700 on gas alone for the weekend.

To say, "I'm not glued to my cell-phone" would be an understatement, as you know. At work or at Track 4; either is a better bet.

Your appearance or, better yet, participation in the next CIR event is greatly anticipated. Contact Reed regarding your "OSKAR" name versus your forum name.
